Celta’s medical staff has provided an update on the progress of Carl Starfelt’s injury over the past few weeks.
According to the club’s medical staff, Carl was experiencing mild lower back pain that worsened while playing for the Swedish national team in a match on March 31. Following a clinical examination, he underwent an MRI of the lumbar spine, which confirmed the presence of an L5-S1 disc herniation.
Since then, the player has undergone conservative treatment, which has included medication, physical therapy, spinal traction techniques, and several epidural injections, the most recent of which was administered this week.
Although his progress has been favorable and he has shown significant improvement, Starfelt continues to face limitations in his on-field activity. For this reason, an external evaluation has been requested from neurosurgeon Dr. Pedro Mata, a leading specialist in spinal surgery in Madrid.
Currently, we are awaiting an assessment of the response to the latest epidural injection, while conservative treatment measures are maintained. In an estimated two to three weeks, his progress will be evaluated, and based on that, the possibility of surgical treatment will be considered.
