Celta was out of luck and off the mark against Sevilla, falling by one goal after playing a good match and missing several good opportunities to score. The sky-blues deserved much more in Sanchez-Pijuan.
After a cold start, Celta started dominating on the pitch and moved the ball well, controlling the match and forcing Sevilla to constantly defend. At the 13 minute mark, Sisto delivered a free-kick from the left and Maxi Gomez spectacularly headed the ball far away from the goal hitting the back of the net to open the scoreboard. It was a fantastic goal which rewarded Celta’s dominance in that phase of the game.
The sky-blue striker could have scored his second goal after 22 minutes of play after a great cross by Wass, but his diving header was off the mark. Short after, Sisto’s goal was disallowed after a masterful set-piece due to an alleged hand-ball by the sky-blue player.
At the 36 minute mark, Sevilla scored the draw on a free-kick delivery headed by Muriel, after a very strict foul call on defensive back Jonny. The scoreboard at halftime was a 1-1 draw.
In the second half, Nolito put the local team ahead by heading to the back of the net. It was a hard blow for Celta after having missed yet another scoring chance in the play before Nolito’s goal. Maxi Gomez flawed another clear chance at the 7 minute mark after a great team move by Celta.
Tucu also missed the target at the goalmouth after a good pass by Wass. Two great chances wasted for the more than deserved draw. Celta dominated the pitch and generated several scoring opportunities, and requested a penalty-kick after a hand-ball in the goal area, but the play ended with Iago Aspas booked with a yellow card after complaining to the referee. With 15 minutes left, Maxi Gomez missed another obvious chance to score.
Celta went into full attack mode at the end of the match, reaching Sevilla’s area several times, but could not transform.
