Celta did not find reward at Abanca Balaídos in a match that got complicated far too early, despite an intent-filled performance.
The Celeste side started with determination, looking to control possession and dictate the game, but Real Oviedo struck on their first real chance through a goal from Alberto Reina. Celta tried to regroup, moving the ball and searching for spaces, but before half-time Fede Viñas struck again to extend the visitors’ lead.
After the break, Celta stepped up and tried to get back into the match with greater intensity. However, the balance once again tipped in favour of the visitors, and Viñas scored his second goal, sealing a game in which the Celeste never stopped pushing.
A difficult day, but with room to react. The team now turns its attention to the demanding league clash away against FC Barcelona and, before that, a key night at Balaídos: the second leg of the European quarter-finals against SC Freiburg, where they will aim to enjoy a European evening with the taste of a comeback.
