RC Celta was eliminated in the second round of the Copa del Rey 2020/21 against a very solid UD Ibiza. The locals, at ease on the artificial turf, got the game on track right away, in the first half hour of play, with two goals from Sergio Castel and one from Javi Pérez. The Ibizan team dominated the game against a Celta team that had a hard time generating chances and was not able to take control of the ball.
In the second half, UD Ibiza sentenced the match with the fourth goal, which came with controversy: the referee pointed to a penalty for a foul by Fontán on Kike López that had occurred outside the area. The Vigo team gained offensive presence with the entrance of Denis Suárez, Brais Méndez, Santi Mina and Alfon in the 62nd minute. Coudet’s team managed to balance the match and cut the distance on the scoreboard, first with a head goal by Santi Mina and then with a great goal by Jordan Holsgrove, a Celta B player, shortly after joining the match.
Celta’s reaction came too late to turn around the overwhelming advantage achieved by UD Ibiza. Already in injury time Santi Mina was able to put his opponent on the ropes from the penalty spot, but what could have been a 4-3 ended up becoming the definitive 5-2 with Rodado scoring on the counter.
Hard elimination from Copa. It is time to focus on the league competition without further delay, as this Friday the sky-blue club hosts Villarreal CF in Abanca Balaídos. RC Celta congratulates UD Ibiza for its qualification to the next round of the Copa del Rey and wishes it the biggest success.
