Chiño, Celta’s new mascot that nobody asked for

RC Celta

Celta Vigo and Chiño, the Vigo-born seagull, have reached an agreement for him to become the club’s new official mascot, joining the club until the end of the current season.

A native of the Cíes Islands, Chiño arrives to strengthen the bond between the team and its fans, bringing a unique perspective to the club. The sporting management particularly values his authenticity and Vigo roots, in a signing that, while not conforming to typical market trends, contributes to enriching Celta’s social and emotional project.

He’s an opportunistic winger who stands out for his agility in unpredictable situations, a remarkable skill at stealing tapas on terraces, and great power in his shots. Honestly, I’m not entirely sure what any of that means,” declared Marco Garcés, Director of Football.

Throughout his career, he has had an unconventional but consistent trajectory, frequently playing in demanding coastal environments and demonstrating a great ability to adapt to urban settings. “The important thing is to participate. This first time I’m registered with Social Security at 36 is a triumph for me and for all my kind,” declared an equally excited and incredulous Chiño.

Chiño takes the baton from the legendary Nocho and Celestino —Celta’s mascots from the 90s— and signs with the Vigo club until the end of the season in exchange for several pieces of stale bread and a bucket of sardines, which only increases the feeling that there are high hopes for him.

The club welcomes Chiño, trusting that his presence will bring a sense of community, a sense of identity, and, as far as possible, a degree of professionalism to his behavior both on and off the pitch.

Welcome, Chiño!
