Sunday 8th December will remain engraved in the memory of Iago Barreiros and the Celta fans. With only 16 years old, the sky blue striker became last weekend the youngest player to score with Celta Fortuna. The young talent from Ponteareas, who is in the Celta reserve team and has already made his debut with the U-17 national team, once again demonstrated his quality and potential by scoring in senior football.
The goal, scored in the last match of Fredi Álvarez’s team against Barcelona Atlètic, came after a brilliant play by Hugo Burcio, another gem of the youth team, and was a reflection of collective work and individual excellence. Burcio set up Barreiros with a perfect pass into the box, and the 34th Celeste did not miss the opportunity.
Barreiros thus surpasses historical players such as Pape Cheikh, Pablo Couñago, Yelko Pino and Gabri Veiga, who all scored for the reserve team at the age of 17. This record highlights the commitment of RC Celta with one of its fundamental pillars: the youth team, and makes clear, once again, that success is not a coincidence, but the result of a meticulous and continued work.
Congratulations, Iago!
